Novel Thoughts #1: Favorite Genres

Welcome to my very first Novel Thoughts post! This week we're talking about our favorite genres. I don't really have a favorite, but if I had to pick one, I think it'd be sci-fi. (That sounds beyond nerdy, but it's true.)

Anyway, Inky, Megan and I compiled our favorite genres and I'll be sharing my favorite book in each one!

Megan's Pick: Contemporary
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanan
Though I don't get to read too many contemporary books, I love the genre. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think, for me, it's Flipped. I really adore it: it's just a cute little story about how crazy and confusing love can be—especially when you're growing up.
Inky's Pick: Historical Fiction
The Book Thief
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Historical Fiction is a genre I've barely dipped my toes into, but I've loved every book I've tried. The Book Thief is one of my favorite books of all time, so it definitely topped my historical fiction favorites list. (Oh, and if you have any historical fiction recommendations, let me know!)
My Pick: Science Fiction
Unwind (Unwind, #1)
Unwind by Neal Shusterman
This is an obvious one—Unwind is my favorite book, and it's sci-fi to its core. My favorite sci-fi books are always the ones that are just on the edge of believability—the ones that can freak you out because they're just a little too possible. You most assuredly get that with Unwind, which is one of the reasons it's my favorite sci-fi book.
Thanks for reading! Let me know if you agree or disagree with my picks, and what books wou would've chosen instead. Also, check out Inky and Megan's posts and see what they chose!

If you had to pick, what's your favorite genre?

  1. Nice picks Chey! Loved the Book Thief! I haven't read flipped but it looks awesome. :D And honestly, since you picked Unwind, you're going to hate me for saying that it was a DNF for me.0_0 FAB POST Chey!

    1. I wholeheartedly recommend Flipped! (:

Haha, I could never hate you! And I can always hope you'll pick it up again someday and love it just as much as I did. ;)

      Thank you! :D

  2. It's really tough to pick a favorite genre...but it would probably be Sci-Fi and my favorite Sci-fi book is The Left Hand of Darkness. To me it is the quintessential science fiction book.

    1. It's definitely hard to pick a favorite, but I'm glad we agree! I haven't heard of that book before, but I'll have to check it out. (:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! (:

  3. ooh, I've never read Flipped, but I can tell that it's moving higher up on my TBR! I thought that The Book Thief was super sad though, and I wish that I had loved it instead of liking it. I still haven't read Unwind! Great post Chey! :D

    1. I completely recommend Flipped! And I agree that The Book Thief was incredibly sad—I was sad for days after I finished it, just thinking about it. It's books that get such a strong emotion out of me like that one that I usually love. (:

I will get you to read Unwind, mark my words, Meg! ;)

  4. If I had to choose my favourite genre, Mystery and Romance would be neck and neck. It's hard to decide between the two of them, so I love those books that have the elements of both. Although I also love comedy, suspense, and thriller. As for Sci-fi, I've only read a few good ones. (Maybe because I don't know that many great sci-fi authors. :(
    Anyway, great post!

    1. Both great genres! There's so many great ones (and normally a book fits into several) so it's supremely hard to pick a favorite.

Thank you! And thanks for letting me know your opinions! (:

  5. I would have to agree with Megan in that contemporary is my favorite genre in YA. If you asked me last year I would have said Dystopian but contemporary has slowly but surely worked its way to number one =) I love that you chose Flipped as your favorite contemporary!! <3

    1. I think the same thing might be happening to me as I dive into more contemporary novels. The genre's slowly winning me over. ;)

      It's such a sweet book—I'm head-over-heels for it! (:

  6. Earthling...
When our eternal soul leaves our body at death
and we wiseabove to meet our Maker,
    only four, last things remain:
    death, judgement, Heaven or Hell
