Today we're going to continue looking in on the frightening side of reading with Skeletons on My Bookshelf. These skeletons (or, if you prefer, books) have been there for as long as you can remember, but for the life of you they still remain unread.
I've got quite a few skeletons on my bookshelves, so I'll share a few of them with you.
Do you have some skeletons of your own hidden away? Should I move any of these up on my TBR list?

I've got quite a few skeletons on my bookshelves, so I'll share a few of them with you.
Confession time: I am addicted to buying secondhand books—it doesn't matter if I haven't read anything about them except for a bunch of bad reviews for it—if it's on sale for under two dollars, you can bet I'll be reaching for my wallet. This unfortunate addiction is how I came to own the first five books in the House of Night series. However, because of some reviews I've read for the first book recently, I'm a little scared to read them, so they're currently hidden on the bottom shelf of my bookcase.
2. Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes
by Maureen Johnson
by Maureen Johnson
Now, I haven't read any books by Maureen Johnson before. (Second confession time: I never read girly contemporary books because I read a few I didn't like—and I never tried any more. I know, I know, shame on me.) But I've always loved the title of this book—it sounds so interesting. I really do want to read it eventually, but since it's kind of old, it got pushed down on my TBR list.
3. That Summer
by Sarah Dessen

Alright, you might want to review my second confession. (See the above paragraph.) I've read three Sarah Dessen books and I just really didn't like any of them—main characters, secondary characters, plots, anything. Still, I fell prey to my discounted book addiction (that would be my first confession of the day) and—tada—now I own another Sarah Dessen novel. And another two of her books I haven't read but don't really want to. (All these bad purchases, and I still keep going to book sales...I'll never learn.)
4. Glow
by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Okay, I have no excuse for not reading this one yet. The only thing I know about it is that it's set in space. (You think I could have at least read the back cover.) I got a free ARC copy from one of my lovely local librarians and it's just been sitting on my shelf ever since. I think I need to read a really good space-set book (like Across the Universe, from what I've heard) to get into the whole intergalactic book feel.
5. Blood Red Road
by Moira Young

I recently won a copy of the book, which should be exciting. But as popular as it is, I think I'm going to hate it. I've heard that there's no quotation marks and purposely misspelled words, and being as I'm the one who my friends automatically come to for all proofreading of homework, I think it's safe to say that a book like this would drive me crazy—I'd be mentally making corrections the whole way through.
I want to read Marked. The series is everywhere! It was always checked out of my library so I could never get it.
ReplyDeleteAnother person I've come across who doesn't like Sarah Dessen books... still I need to try one of her books once because she's one of those authors with countless books out there that are read and loved by many.
She’s Got Books on Her Mind
I think I just need to read Marked already and see if I like it or not! Yeah, I think you either love all Sarah Dessen's books or just don't like any of them, so everyone's got to try one at some point and figure out if it's their cup of tea. (:
DeleteThe only one I've read of these is Marked, and I definitely wouldn't be moving it up if it were my list. :) I like Maureen Johnson in general, but I haven't read that one.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to my skeletons:

Uh oh, that doesn't sound good... But that's good news on the Maureen Johnson book. I just might move it up on my list! (:
DeleteI haven't read any of these but I would not recommend reading Across the Universe as your first space themed book. I read the first half and thought it was horrible. I haven't picked up another space book since!
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same dilemma about Blood Red Road as you. I've heard so many good reviews but I picked it up at the store and saw all the grammar stuff and was like no way hahaha!
Uh oh, maybe I'd actually be best starting off my space-book reading with Glow after all. :P
DeleteWhew, glad I'm not the only put off by that, haha!
OMG, I also bought the first four books of the "House of the Night" series. (It was a 2+2 sale :) I didn't like the first one, so I quickly sold them... :) Hope you'll enjoy it, it has a pretty good rating on GR.
ReplyDeleteHere is my list.
Haha, I'm not the only one tempted by book sales! Hopefully I'll enjoy them more than you did. (:
DeleteI'll check it out! (:
OH you are missing out on Dustlands! I know that it's bad grammar, but that's the style of the book and I thought it was totally gorg!!!! :D You must read. :D
ReplyDeleteArgh, I really do want to read it...I know I'm going to have to eventually. I'm just too curious about it. ;)
DeleteOhh, I hated Marked! I just didn't like the House of Night series though, so I'm biased. Now, 13 Little Blue Envelopes is AWESOME! You have to read it, so that you can read the sequel, which is AMAZING. Look at this quote, it's beautiful!
ReplyDelete"People would say that it's impossible to have a private pool in the city, unless you were some sort of rich mogul and had it on the roof of your penthouse or something. But it's not illegal to have a really clean dumpster, and if you want to fill it with water, and if you want to get in it... well, that's your prerogative. People always say they can't do things, that they're impossible. They just haven't been creative enough. This pool is a triumph of imagination. That's how you win at life, Gin. You have to imagine your way through. Never say something can't be done. There's always a solution, even if it's weird."
That Summer--I can't give you a good reason to read it. I didn't like it, and the movie was bad. But I love Just Listen! It's the only book that ranks LOVE by Sarah Dessen! :D
I really, really, really want to read Blood Red Road, but I understand. I do that mental correction thing too! It's my future career, lol. Proofreader. That way I still get awesome books! ;F
Uh oh, another point against Marked. :P
DeleteThat quote: pure awesome. I'll move it up on my list! xD
Hmm, I may have to give her books another chance. Someone also recommended This Lullaby from Sarah Dessen as an amazing book, so maybe I've just read all her bad ones. ;)
Hahaha, perfect plan! :D
The only book I have heard of is 13 Little Blue Envelopes and the author Sarah Dessen sounds familiar. I can see how buying a lot of second-hand books would cause you to have many books you haven't read. We have the flagship Half Price Books here, but I don't allow myself to go there often or I'd end up with yet another stack of books to read.

Hahaha, I understand that! Around where I live, they have two mega-sized book sales a year, and I eagerly await both of them. I always have to set a spending limit, though, or I'd come home with enough books to fill another bookcase!
DeleteThanks! (:
Hey there! It's true Marked is (at least in my opinion) not the most brilliant work of art, but I found it an entertaining read - something light ... and actually quite fitting for Halloween. Ive read That Summer, too and although I love Sarah Dessen's books this one does not belong to my favorites :/
ReplyDeleteHmm, I'd never thought of reading it for Halloween—good thought! Maybe I should read another one of Sarah Dessen's books next. Thanks for commenting! (:
DeleteI really quite liked the House of Night Series..I know a lot of people hated them, but I liked em! I love boarding school books though, so I'm slightly biased. I didn't love That Summer but Sarah Dessen has a bunch of other great books...I liked The Truth About Forever and Keeping the Moon.

Ooh, so a vote for Marked! I really love boarding schools too, I didn't know it was set at one!
DeleteWell, I definitely check those two out! (:
Don't let the writing in Blood Red Road fool you. It's a unique book that I'm sure you'll love. It's like reading Huck Finn in a way. Once you get used to the language, it'll be almost impossible for you to put it down.
ReplyDeleteI completely recommend it :)
Okay, okay, I think I've been won over—I'll definitely have to give it a try! (:
