Haunted Week 2012: Ghosts of Books Half-Read

{This Girl Reads}

Welcome to the first day of Haunted Week! I'll pull up a scare for you. (Oh, the terrible jokes I make...)

Today's topic: Ghosts of Books Half-Read. Now, I try to finish every book I start, but there are some I put down and I didn't pick up off the shelf ever again: they've been haunting me ever since.

So I introduce to you five of the ghosts of my reading pasts. Explore my graveyard of half-finished novels below: Enter at your own risk.

Saving June1. Saving June
 by Hannah Harrington
This is definitely my most recent read—err, half-read. My bookmark's still wedged nearly halfway through my paperback: I just don't feel like picking it up again. The book sounded amazing when I read the summary, but from the moment I started it, I didn't like the main character, Harper. I wasn't enjoying the book, so it got put to the side. Or more accurately, put onto my overstuffed bookshelves.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3)
2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
 by J.K. Rowling
No, I have not read the Harry Potter series. (Please, put your wands and dangerous non-muggle items away—I mean you no harm.) Better late than never, right? The series has become my guilty pleasure reading for when I have reading time but no books to read for my blog. But I haven't had a lull in blog books for a while now, though, so my Harry Potter Book Counter is currently stuck in the middle of #3.

Juliet Immortal (Juliet Immortal, #1)
3. Juliet Immortal
 by Stacey Jay
Now this one is a bit unique: I was only a couple of chapters in, but I was loving the book. However, it was an audiobook I'd downloaded from my library, and before I finished it, the book expired. Since I don't really listen to audiobooks anyway (and also because I'm incredibly lazy) I've never gotten back on the website and downloaded it again. But I plan to! Maybe tomorrow. Or next week. Eventually.

The Pledge (The Pledge, #1)4. The Pledge
 by Kimberly Derting
Oh, insta-love. How you vanquish even the most amazing of books. Guys, I loved the prologue to this book. Really. It will go down in history as one of my all-time favorite beginnings. But lo and behold, a certain guy was introduced and, right after him, the very dreaded insta-love. Now, here might be a reason, or maybe it's justifiable in some way if you read on in the book, but otherwise...no. Just no.

The Lost Saint (The Dark Divine, #2)5. The Lost Saint
 by Bree Despain
I didn't exactly enjoy the first book in this book's series, The Dark Divine, (see my review of book disgruntlement here) but I was hoping the sequel would blow me away with wonderfulness. I got a few chapters into it and...nope. I'm still not a fan of the books. I'm still not rooting for the main couple. And I'm still wondering why the covers have awkwardly-pale legs on them.

So now you've seen the dark side of my bookshelf—should I pick any of these up again? What half-read books are haunting you?

  1. I wanna know about the awkward pale legs too! They don't have anything to do with the book...

Ok, definitely read Juliet Immortal! I thought it was totally worth it, and I can't wait to read it again...when I find it! :D

(I did the same thing with Saving June, but somehow I got the UK version from NG....)

    1. Whew, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's been wondering that! ;D And I'll definitely have to check Juliet Immortal out again!

    1. I know, I know, I'm ashamed. :( And I'm best friends with the self-proclaimed biggest Harry Potter fan of all-time. So she's making sure I read them! (:

  3. Oh, I should have commented here...
I loved HP years ago, but this year I entered a HP challenge, then I had to quit because I was not in the mood to read them again. Maybe I'm too old...
Here is my first Halloween post.

    1. Awe, that's too bad. I'm always afraid of reading books I loved again because I'm afraid I might not like them as much!

  4. The only one of these I've read is The Pledge. The insta-love was incredibly annoying but overall I still enjoyed the book and am planning on reading the sequel. Oh darn, I wanted to read Saving June but there is nothing worse than hating the main character =P Guess I'll be skipping that one!

    1. I think I'll pick up The Pledge again because I just really loved it otherwise. Well, you might enjoy more than I did, so you might want to check it out! (:

  5. Hee hee! Yes, Dark Divine was just OK, considering I don't even remember what they are about. But yes, it distresses and saddens me that HP is on your list...sigh. Here's my list: http://inkandpage.me/haunted-week-2012-ghosts-of-books-half-read/

    1. Haha, at the beginning of the year, my goal was to read the entire Harry Potter series. Seeing as it's October and I've completed two of them, I don't think I'm going to make it. There's always next year! (:

    2. I'm going to make you feel worse, OK? Ready? On my daughters 11th birthday [the age Harry is in the first book, in case you don't remember ;) ] I started reading HP to her. After we finished each book, we'd watch the movie. I read all of the books out loud from August to December so she could experience the last 2 movies in the theater. 2013 is the year for you, I can feel it.

    3. Haha, it'll have to be! I've been doing the same with reading a book and then watching the movie, because I like to have everything about a book fresh in my memory when I watch the movie. The first was dead-on perfect! And completely adorable.

  6. Well I'm an old timer but I loved the Harry Potter books and the movies. I wish they had had them when I was a kid but nevertheless I've read them now. Cheyenne, I was wondering if you'd be interested in my books/short stories. They are all spooky and pretty much for all ages and just in time for Halloween. Thanks!

    1. Hopefully I can finish the series soon. I've seen the first movie and loved it—I hope they're all as good as that one!

Check out my review policy. Thanks!

  7. I agree with you on The Pledge, the prologue was really good... but then the guy appeared and everything went poof! I almost quit, but I decided to finish anyways.
And Juliet Immortal, I have to check that one out! It sounds really good :)

    1. The worst part is I still kind of want to read it. ;)

I'm really excited to finish that one! Fingers crossed it's as good as the beginning!

  8. Check out my post here:http://abeautyandthebook.blogspot.com/

I'm trying to get through Juliet Immortal right now...I'm not sure I'll be able to. Can't pinpoint it...maybe because I'm reading a bajillion other books at the same time. :/

    1. Ooh, yeah, that causes problems when I do that, too. I try to only read one book at a time, because otherwise I get completely ADHD about reading them, but I've still found myself reading a bunch of books at once in the past. I'll never learn. ;)

    2. I definitely have your "Saving June" issue a lot. If I don't like the main character, I usually just can't get interested in the world of the book.

      Delete
    3. Well, we're usually seeing their world through their eyes. If you don't like them, it's kind of difficult to like the book! (:

  9. Hi Cheyenne,
Juliet Immortal is also on my bookselves since.... So long already ? Oups! But there is so many books to read that sometimes I'm focusing on the new releases and not on the one I've already purchased. And I'm guilty too of reading 3, 4 books at the same times(sometimes more!) It's seems that I can't help myself!
But I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one...
    Have a great sunday!
    Lucie

    1. I definitely understand that! Nope, you're not the only one—it's a bad habit of mine that I keep finding myself doing.

You have a great day too! (:
